Diploma in Population Studies (D.P.S.)
This programme is designed to provide basic understanding of the principles of
population studies and interrelationship between population and various
socio-economic factors.The students also get rigorous hands on computer training in
the application of demographic and statistical packages.
Courses offered
Preparatory courses
- Mathematics, Social Science Concepts, Basic Statistical Techniques, Communication Skill in English and Personality Development and Basics of Computer.
Main courses
- Introduction to Demography, Sources of Demographic Data.
- Fertility and Nuptiality.
- Mortality, Morbidity, Public Health and Reproductive Health.
- Migration, Spatial Distribution and Urbanization.
- Social Research Methodology.
- Population Policies and Programmes, Management and Evaluation of Family Welfare Programmes.
- Population Estimates and Projections and Labour Force.
- Population, Development and Gender Issues.
- Evaluation and Adjustment of Data.
- Advanced Computer.
Each student is also required to write a term paper on some demographic or related problems under
the guidance of a faculty member.
On completion of two semesters of credited and non-credited courses,the students are taken on a tour to visit government, non-government and research organizations in various parts of India to get acquainted with their work in the field of population and health.
The performance of the students is evaluated through a combination of assignments, written examination and comprehensive viva-voce.
Duration of the programme
The duration of the Programme is one academic year, spread over two semesters beginning from the month of July every year.
Study tour
After completion of the second semester examination, the students are taken on
a study tour to visit government and non-government organisations engaged in research and intervention
activities in the field of population and health in different parts of the country.
Eligibility criteria
Graduates from a recognized University in social science subjects, namely, Economics, Sociology, Geography, Psychology, Anthropology, Social Work, Mathematics, Statistics, Health and allied sciences.
Undergraduates having experience in the areas of Health, Planning, Management, Community Research, Census operations, Socio-economic Surveys, Human Resource Development and other allied sciences may also apply for admission. Final admission will be on the recommendation of the admission committee.

The Institue does not provide any fellowship to the students of this programme.However, most of the foreign students in this programme avail fellowship/funding from country offices of UNFPA/UNDP/Non-Govenment Organisation or sponsored through their repective organizations/Govenments.Interested candidates are advised to explore themselves to arrange for their fellowship/funding.
