  • Invited by the World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva as a Temporary Advisor to WHO, Geneva during April 23-27, 2007 under the “Bloomberg Global Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use” the context of “Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS)” in fifteen high-burden countries (including India) in tobacco use..
  • Recipient of number of International Research Awards (such as Fulbright New Century Scholars Award, Rockefeller Post-doctoral Award, and other awards from USAID, UPFPA, and UN) for carrying out research and training in Formal Demography and other related areas.
  • Received invitation from various reputed national and international organizations /institutions to deliver lectures on formal demography and mortality analysis during 1999-2004.

Teaching and Research Experiences at IIPS, Mumbai:

        Having more than 36 years of Teaching and Research experiences in Formal Demography, and Techniques of Mortality Analysis (with special attention to adult and old ages) and other allied fields. Having research experience in various areas, such as, Child Survival and Sex-preferences among child-desiring persons; Populating Ageing, Demographic & Socio-economic Correlates of Knowledge and Awareness about HIV/AIDS. Guided several M. Phil. and Ph. D. Dissertations in various topics in demographic analysis in addition to the guidance of several research papers (more than 50) prepared by the post-graduate students as a part of the Master Degree programme of IIPS, Mumbai.

Consultancy (National & International)

  • Worked at Mumbai as a Consultant to the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), Hyderabad for four months during April to July 1996 in a NIRD, Hyderabad sponsored project entitled, “Estimation of Life Expectancy in Rural Areas of India”. A part of the project report was later on published in the Journal of Rural Development, Vol.16, No.1, 1997.

  • Worked at Mumbai as a Consultant to the East West Center (EWC), Honolulu, Hawaii during May to August 1995 to write a research monograph on ‘Awareness and Knowledge on AIDS among Indian Women based on the NFHS I, 1992-93 Survey data’ in collaboration with the EWC, Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. Published in the Health Transition Review, Supplement to Vol.7, 1997.

Short-Term Academic Visits to the Universities/Institutions (Abroad):

  • Visiting Professor at the “Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences” of the ‘American University of Beirut’, Lebanon during November 12-23, 2001.
  • Visiting Fellow at the East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. during February-March, 1999 in connection with preparing a research monograph on Nutrition Status of Indian Children.

International Awards:

  •  Received the prestigious fellowship award of the Fulbright New Century Scholars (NCS) Program in its inaugural year 2001-2002. Thirty senior scholars who had been working in health related issues were selected from various developed and developing countries to carry out researches in the areas related to mortality and health. Only one Indian scholar was selected in the inaugural year of the Fulbright NCS Program.

  • Recipient of USAID fellowship award as a Visiting Fellow at the EWC, Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. to carry out a collaborative research with the senior faculty members of East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii on “Nutrition Status of Indian Children” for two months during February-March, 1999.

  • Recipient of Post Doctoral Fellowship Award of the Rockefeller Foundation, New York for about one & half year during 1987 88 for collaborative research in formal demography and mortality analysis at the Population Studies Center, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, U.S.A.

  • In addition to various Indian Universities and Institutions I was invited to deliver lectures in Formal demography and Mortality Analysis by various foreign Universities/Institutions in USA, Canada, and Germany such as, East-West Population Institute, East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii in 1999; Population Studies Center, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia in 2000, Dept. of Sociology, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada in 2000; Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences, American University of Beirut, Lebanon in 2001; Dept. of Biological Sciences, Stanford University, Stanford, California in 2002; Dept. of Population & Family Health Sciences, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore in 2002; Dept. of Mathematics, University of Louisiana, Lafayette in 2002; Institute for Community Research, Hartford, Connecticut in 2002; Dept. of Demography, University of California, Berkeley in 2004; and Chicago Medical Center, and Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Rostock, Germany in 2004.

Some Important Miscellaneous Activities (Academic and Professional):

  • Served as the Chief-Coordinator in organizing an International Conference on “Emerging Population Issues in Asia-Pacific Region: Challenges for the Twenty-first Century” held at Grand Hyatt (a five-star deluxe hotel) in Mumbai during December 10-13, 2006 sponsored by IIPS, Mumbai on the occasion of its Golden jubilee year. The conference was participated by about 400 participants from 39 countries from Asia and Pacific Region and some from USA, UK and Australia.

  • Programme coordinators in Planning and Organizing three Seminars at National and State levels on Population Dynamics and Health Related Issues during 1995-1998.

  • Served as the Research Coordinator to look after various academic and administrative issues of various research projects undertaken by the faculty members of IIPS, Mumbai during 2005-2007.

  • Served as Course Coordinators in various Training Programs at IIPS, Mumbai, such as, M. Phil. degree course for two years (2000-2002), various short-term Training Programmes for scholars from India and abroad for three years (1997-2000) sponsored by various National and International Organizations.

  • Co-PIs in various collaborative studies and research projects funded by various International Agencies (such as, Rockefeller Foundation, New York, 1987-88; USAID, New Delhi (1996 & 1999), UNICEF, Maharashtra (2002) World AIDS Foundation (WAF), Switzerland (2002-2004), National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), Washington D.C., 2005-2008).

  • Generated fund through various short-term Training Programs and collaborative studies and research projects sponsored and funded by various National and International Organizations.

  • Reviewer of research papers submitted for their publication in reputed National and International Demographic Journals (Viz., Demography-India, Demography, from USA.

  • Served as an honorary Co-Editor of SANKHYĀ (an Internationally Reputed Indian Journal of Statistics) for 3 years during 2000-02.

  • External Examiners of various reputed Indian Universities recognized by University Grant Commission of India for evaluating M. Phil. and Ph.D. dissertations.

  • Received invitation from various reputed national and international organizations/institutions (particularly from USA, Canada and Germany) and American University at Beirut, Lebanon as well to deliver lectures on formal demography and mortality analysis during 1999-2004.
