b) Supporting the Library

Introduction :           
The International Institute for Population Sciences has started in 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Govt.of India and the United Nations.  It has established itself as a premier institute for training and research in Population studies for developing countries in the Asia and Pacific region.  It is training centre for population studies for ESCAP region, recognized by the United Nations for Population Activities (UNFPA) further expansion of the institute has been take place with the recognition of University Grant Commission as a 'Deemed University" status in the year 1985.

To support the academic activities of the vast geographical area, for highly specialized subject 'Population Studies', the library of institute is always remained at forefront since the establishment of the institute.

IIPS library has been amassing extraordinary collection for last few centuries.  Today it is one of the world's most important library in the field of 'Population Studies'.

Open access system, subject collection of the United Nations, Census Publications of India and neighbor countries, online databases, online journals subscriptions, electronic books and journals, digitized volumes access and maintaining the balance of procurement of  printed books and journals and at the same time application of advance IT devices for storage, retrieval and dissemination of information are major positive points of the library.

D) Services

a) Imaging Services:
We provide image reproduction on Scanning/Photocopying and Document Delivery Service on request.

b) Inter Library Loan:
We facilitate this service to local academic institutions.

c) User Orientation Service:
To maximize the utilization of library information sources as well as services we provide library orientation service to each regular, part-time and short term training course participants.All the academic courses of the Institute start with library user orientation program.

d) CAS/SDI:
This service is provided to all the interested book lovers with using personal/official e-mail platform.

e) Indexing:
More than 60 core journals on population study have been selected for content indexing and added in OPAC for effective and pinpointed retrieval of demographic information.  The above service has been extended to edited books and grey literature.

E) Collection

The library procures large number of documents in various forms on population studies and allied areas.  The table shows state-of-art collection in figures. (as on 22/2/2010)

F) Digital Library :Digitization of census of India 1872-1941

a) Special Collection :
Census of India publications have special importance in the process of research and teaching of population studies.  Looking the importance of the above publications, to extend the life of the volumes and to enhance the retrieval system of demographic data with retrospective effect we digitized in PDF format the following volumes
