M.P.S. (Correspondence)

In view of the growing demand for intensive and need-based training in the field of population data analysis and inter-relationship between Population and Development, the Institute has started a Distance Education Programme leading to Master’s Degree in Population Studies in 1994. The current intake for academic session 2008-2009(15th Batch) will begin in July 2008.

Eligibility criteria for admission :
Admission to this course is open to all those with a Master's degree from any recognized University in any of the Social Science subjects including Mathematics, Statistics, Health & allied subjects. Preference will be given to candidates having experience in population, Health and /or in allied areas.

Number of seats:
There are 50 seats available for admission to this course. However, the Institute reserves the right to decide the number of students to be enrolled in each academic session.

Selection criteria:
Selection of candidates for the course will be done by a selection committee duly constituted by the Director of the Institute.

Duration of course:
This course can be completed in a minimum period of two years, as well within a maximum period of four years.

Components of the program:
    Essentially there will be following components of teaching under this programme:
  1. Sending of self instruction course materials to the students by post: The self-instructional course materials are sent to the students in three lots by post/courier services. The materials include instructions for self study and self assessment exercises.
  2. Contact programmes in the Institute: Every year contact programme of two weeks duration is organised in the Institute in the month of June/July. During the contact programme a thorough feedback on the course material sent throughout the year is given in addition to the laboratory exercises related to technical papers, computer applications and preparation of term paper/dissertation.
  3. Evaluation & Examinations: Examination will be held twice in a year (June/July and December) at the Institute. The written examination is followed by preparation of a Term paper and viva-voce examination.
    The evaluation is done by direct grading system. In order to qualify for the degree, a student is required to obtain a total of 44 credits (written examination and assignments: 34 credits, term paper: 5 credits, viva-voce: 5 credits).
