M.P.S. /M.Phil.
This programme is designed to inculcate fundamentals of
population studies and interface of population with other
disciplines of social science, development and public
policy. Problems of youth and adolescence, reproductive
health and gender issues are given special attention. The
module of the MPS programme is designed to make students
self- sufficient in basics of population science, computer
applications, data collection and analyses, preparing
a report, taking part in group discussions and professional
presentation in seminars and conferences. Students receive
rigorous hands on computer training in the application of
demographic packages such as MORTPACK and
SPECTRUM, statistical packages such as SPSS and
STATA, and mapping software such as GIS. During the
course, students undergo field training in data collection
methods and visit government, non-government and
research organizations in different parts of India to get
acquainted with their work in the field of population and
health.
Admission requirements:
Applicants should hold a Master Degree in Economics,
Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Geography, Social
Work, Population Studies, Mathematics or Statistics from
a recognized University. Candidates appearing for the
qualifying examination and expecting results by June 30,
2008 can also apply for admission.
The Institute selects students through a written admission
test followed by a personal interview. The weighed score
of qualifying examination, admission test and personal
interview is the basis of selection on merit. Indian
applicants called for admission test can claim sleeper-class,
round-trip fare on production of original travel documents.
Local travel cost is not reimbursed. Foreign applicants
fulfilling the admission requirements are exempted from
the admission test.
The total number of seats available, with and without
fellowship, has been restricted to 30.
The duration of MPS course is one year, and the medium
of instruction is English.
M.Phil. in Population Studies:
This is an advance course in population research. The
course work comprises of an advance research methodology
half unit course, seminar work and dissertation under
the guidance of a faculty.
A total of five top-ranking students from those who have
successfully completed the MPS course are given the
option to pursue the M Phil course. The remaining students
are awarded the MPS degree.
Each year announcement for admission to MPS/M.Phil. is made in March-April in the
institute website and leading news papers.

Fee structure
All Indian students are required to pay a tuition and related
fee of Rs. 4250/-, hostel accommodation and establishment
charge of Rs. 200/- per month and refundable library
deposit of Rs 1,500/-. The foreign students are charged a
tuition and related fee of US$ 8,200/- , hostel fee of US$
150/- per month and refundable library deposit of US$
100/-.
Those who join the hostel mess are required to pay a
refundable deposit of Rs. 1,000/- and monthly boarding
charges, which is computed on cost-sharing basis by all
members. As mess services are subsidized and the
institute places order for many guest lunches, the actual
mess bill for a student does not usually exceed Rs. 1000/-
per month.

A one-unit course involves 40 hours of classroom lecture
while a half-unit course is composed of 20 hours of lecture.
A student is expected to take all the preparatory and main
courses and one of the optional courses. The performance
of a student is evaluated through a combination of
assignments, written examination and comprehensive viva-voce.
On successful completion of two semesters of
credited and non-credited courses, students go for field
visits, and on return are guided to write, present and defend
a term paper on a selected research topic.

Professional opportunities:
Ever expanding global humanitarian service has created new
jobs worldwide in academics, survey research, data analysis,
programme implementation and evaluation of social
policies. On completion of MPS, most get immediate
employment in the Institute’s research projects. Subsequently,
many take up jobs in multinational companies,
market research firms and international organizations.
The Institute prides itself on its alumni who occupy key
positions in many foreign universities and reputed international
organizations such as the Population Council, UNFPA,
UNAIDS and UNICEF. Those who wish to take up
academic posts do the M. Phil course and/or apply to Institute’s
Ph.D. programme.

Each selected Indian student will be awarded a Government of India fellowship @ Rs.2500/- per month..
Submission of application:
The prescribed application form can either be obtained by post or downloaded from the Institute
website. Completed application form and copies of transcripts
attested by a Gazetted Officer or public notary should be
submitted with a demand draft for Rs.200/- payable to
“The Director, International Institute for Population
Sciences, Mumbai” drawn at Mumbai.
Foreign and ST/SC applicants are exempted from processing fees.
