Ph.D. in Population Studies

The doctoral programme is designed to prepare students for professional leadership in the field of population well as for pursuing academic career.

Eligibility criteria for admission :
Candidates having Master's or M.Phil. degree in Population Studies of recognised university with at least 55% of marks or equivalent grade (B+); and/or Candidates who have passed National Educational Testing (NET) in Population Studies conducted by the University Grants Commission are eligible of Ph.D. admission. However, in case of those who do not have Masters degree in Population Studies will have to undergo one year Masters degree Programme in Population Studies at the Institute.

 

Selection criteria:
  • Candidates will be short-listed for presentation of research proposal and interview on the basis of their past academic records. Selection of candidates for the course will be made on the basis of candidates past academic records, presentation of research proposal and personal interview.
  • Only short-listed candidates will be called for the presentation and interview. The Institute shall not bear any travel expense of the candidates called for the presentation and interview. Reservation for Scheduled Castes /Scheduled Tribes candidates will be considered as per the UGC norms.
Sponsorship:
  • Some Officials can also be sponsored by Government departments, research institutions, universities, medical colleges and non-governmental organisations for being considered for admission.
  • Eligible foreign students can also apply for admission provided they secure financial support from any outside agencies.
Requirements for the degree:
  • A Ph.D. student is required to undertake an original research topic selected by him/her in consultation with the guide. The research proposal will be discussed and its feasibility would be examined in a student faculty seminar by a committee constituted by the board of studies and research on the recommendation of the guide who will be convener of the committee.
  • A Ph.D. student should make at least two presentations related to the topic of the Ph.D. research during his/her on going research work in a faculty student seminar of the institute, in addition to the proposal and synopsis presentations. These two presentations must be made by the students before permitted to present his/her synopsis of Ph.D. work.
  • A Ph.D. student should submit 4 copies of the synopsis to the institute and within 3 months from the date of presentation of the synopsis he/she should submit his/her thesis. If a student fails to submit the thesis within the stipulated time(3 month from the date of presentation of synopsis) on recommendation the guide, an extension of 3 months may be allowed by the Director in genuine case; failing which the candidate may be given one more chance to present his/her synopsis again.

Fellowship:
The selected Indian students will be awarded a Government of India fellowship initially for one year only and is extendable on yearly basis as per rules of the Institute. Each eligible candidate with NET qualification for lectureship only either in Population Studies or its interdisciplinary subjects will be awarded the fellowship @ Rs. 12,000/- per month for first and second years and Rs. 14,000/- per month for third year respectively. Each fellowship carries a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- for the first two years and Rs. 20,500/- for the third year. However, the candidates without NET qualification for lectureship shall be awarded the Government of India fellowship @ Rs. 6,250/- p.m. for first and second years and Rs. 7,000/- p.m. for third year respectively with an annual contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/-.



The Institute gives preference to admit to its Ph.D. Programme, candidates who have qualified National Educational Testing of UGC in Population Studies or its interdisciplinary subjects or in receipt of any other Population fellowship.

Submission of application:
The prescribed application form can either be obtained by post or downloaded from the Institute website. Completed application form and copies of transcripts attested by a Gazetted Officer or public notary should be submitted with a demand draft for Rs.200/- payable to “The Director, International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai” drawn at Mumbai.
